Diary and autobiography of Lorenzo Brown, 1856-1899.

Negative photostat of Lorenzo Brown's autobiography, begun in 1856 and covering the years from 1833 to 1899. Much of the autobiography was apparently copied by Brown from his diaries. Events describes in the autobiography include his conversion to Mormonism, his childhood visit from Joseph Smith, Smith's death, Brown's life in Nauvoo, his work on the Nauvoo Temple, his life in Winter Quarters and travels to Utah, his work in lead mines, his mission to England and Scotland in the 1870s, and his later life in Arizona. Much of the autobiography was kept while Brown was living in St. George, and he writes of the difficulties and pleasures of being sent to a new settlement, noting "I am...among comparative strangers but everyone I meet has a smile of welcome...a warm greeting from previous acquaintance...reconciles me perfectly to my situation."

Lorenzo Brown was born on February 2, 1823, in Ponifret, New York. His father joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1835 and in 1837 Joseph Smith briefly stayed with the Brown family. Lorenzo was baptized in 1838, and the following year moved with his family to Nauvoo, Illinois. While in Illinois Brown was a farmer, worked as a barge laborer, helped build the Nauvoo Temple, and served in the Nauvoo Legion.
